I remember when ceramic particles were the hot idea for waterproofing
jackets, though I never saw an explanation of how they worked.  Nowadays
it's rare to see it advertised, although Marmot says that its Pre-Cip
technology uses ceramic particles for durability.

So I have no idea of the applicability of this to wateproof jackets, but
MIT researchers say they can now make ceramics out of rare earths, making
them waterproof, durable, and resistant to heat.  The article seems to say
that they anticipate coating turbines and engines with it.
