Yes, the iPhone 4S on Verizon has a micro sim.  You can see the tiny slot on the right side of the phone.  However, don't mess with removing the SIM - it's easy to lose.  Just disable it with the SIM PIN.

And, yes, the phone stats I referred to earlier were with the phone in airplane mode and all the other recommendations made for saving battery power.  The key is that when the SIM is locked and you take the phone out of airplane mode, you can still use GPS without the phone trying to find a carrier signal.
