On the other hand it is durable and cheap, so if you are looking for something to protect the bottom of your tent from sharp stones and spines in the desert where water vapor is not a problem, it may fit the bill. 

As for why use a tent in the desert, two reasons: 1) wind protection, 2) protection from no-see-ums and biting flies. Protected locations are at a premium in the desert so sometimes you need to carry your own wind protection.
