In the Grand Junction area you might want to stop in the Colorado National = Monument, just south of town. A beautiful park of red rock canyons. There i= s a campground and many hiking trails. At the park's visitors center you ca= n ask about access to the BLM lands and the Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness = Area to the south and west of the monument. Further west near Green River, UT check out Crystal Geyser south of town al= ong the Green River. It's a cold water geyser on BLM lands. You can camp ne= ar there for free. Southwest of there in the San Rafael Swell is Goblin Valley State Park (cam= pground and hiking) and nearby slot canyons to explore on the edge of the S= well (free camping). On top of the Swell there are exits off the Interstate= to areas of the Swell for more free camping. East of Goblin Valley is a 30 mile drive in on gravel roads to Horseshoe Ca= nyon (a part of Canyonlands NP), a great canyon hike to see amazing petrogl= yph panels! You can camp for free at the trailhead.
