I do the same. It's easier to do this if one is located in southern
California and it's summer. In particular one of the classic dayhikes is
to the Bridge to Nowhere, which involves crossing and re-crossing the San
Gabriel River (really more like a creek during the summer) over a dozen
times. Most hiking books said change out of your hiking boots, which we
did the first time we did the hike but after that I said the heck with it
and just splashed through. In So Calif it all dries quickly.
