Dave and all, The cyclists' You Tube posts with the video and various news reports state that the cyclists are doing OK. They are apparently bruised and battered but their bikes are trashed. Here's the link to their original video. You can skip to about 2:30 in the 4:23 video if you don't want to watch them climb towards Tunnel Road. The slow-motion replays following the original video are pretty damning of the driver, IMHO. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3LatOGCWVc According to the story in Berkeley Patch: "Michael Patrick Medaglia, 43, was arrested for possession of heroin, being a felon in possession of ammunition, violation of probation, and felony hit-and-run." It sure looks to me like the hit was deliberate, especially if he was high, had ammunition in his possession, and otherwise has a history of violence. (He was on probation at the time of his arrest after a prior arrest for carrying and/or brandishing a switchblade.) The hundreds of comments at the video site now reflect the full spectrum of bike advocates, trolls, pro- and anti-bike comments, etc.... It appears from the video that the driver will be identified, hopefully real soon, and will face justice. Has anyone heard yet if the two cyclists are alright? We certainly hope so. >> >> I also want to let everyone know that Berkeley and Oakland are busy planning the designs for bike lanes on Tunnel Road between Domingo and SR 13, with separation between the bike lane and travel lane. I realize that "space" would not have avoid this crash (no amount of engineering can deal with a driver not paying attention), but it will definitely help. We will keep you posted on this. >> >> Dave Campbell >> Program Director >> East Bay Bicycle Coalition >> office: 510-845-7433 >> cell: 510-701-5971 >> www.ebbc.org >> >> Support the work of the East Bay Bicycle Coalition by making a donation to Team EBBC for the Climate Ride 2012.
