Currently, walking and biking account for 12 percent of all trips in  
the U.S. Yet these means of transportation receive only 1.6 percent of  
federal transportation spending. What we need is for our public  
officials, at every level, to recognize this great urgency to make our  
communities more bikeable and walkable. Also, transit needs to be  
widely available, especially for low-income communities that cannot  
rely on cars for transportation.
