Olivia, I just posted it as an educational opportunity. I would love to see some "Sunday Street" closures here in Alameda but that was not necessarily my reason for posting it... Since I have a jury duty call at 8:30 AM I probably will miss it now... The open streets movement in North America has grown from only 11 initiatives in 2005 to over 80 in 2012, with more initiatives being launched each year. A free webinar produced by APBP and the Open Streets Project includes a history of the Open Streets movement, discussion of the health and equity benefits of Open Streets programs, and an introduction to the Open Streets Project interactive website and tools for organizing an event. The webinar also features case studies of a large city's open streets program (Chicago) and a smaller city's program (Somerville, Mass.). Participants will learn about best practices in North and South America and additional resources that can provide further guidance for cities organizing new initiatives. The webinar is free and will be recorded for future viewing. Presenters are Mike Samuelson, Alliance for Biking & Walking; Julia Kim, Active Transportation Alliance; and Jackie Rosetti, City of Somerville. >> >> FHWA Experimentation for Advancing Best Practices >> Wednesday, October 17| 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time >> $50/site for APBP members | $75/site for non-members >> Register here: http://www.apbp.org/event/Oct-17_webinar >> The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) formal experimentation process is an essential part of identifying best practices for bicycle and pedestrian design. The process offers many benefits but isn't well understood. Although some practitioners mistakenly regard them as difficult, time-consuming and expensive, in fact formal experiments can move innovative devices to implementation more quickly, reduce the use of non-compliant devices, and help protect jurisdictions from liability while innovative treatments are tested. Attend this session to learn the truth behind the misconceptions, how to develop and successfully apply for a safe, effective experiment, and how the results of experimentation are institutionalized in design guidance. >> >> Bruce Friedman, a Transportation Specialist on the MUTCD Team in the Office of Transportation Operations at FHWA, will lay the groundwork and outline the application and experimentation process. Nadia Barrera, a Project Coordinator with the City of Austin Public Works Department, will describe four official experiments that the City of Austin, Texas, carried out related to new facilities requested in the 2020 Bicycle Plan Update that were not at the time in the MUTCD (sharrows, bike boxes, colored lanes, and "bicycle may use full lane" signs). >> >> APBP has applied to the AICP for one Certification Maintenance credit for this webinar. APBP will provide an attendance certificate to those who document their professional development hours. Cost to purchase a site license is $50 for APBP members, $75 for non-APBP members. Each site license includes one phone connection (toll charges apply, or use VoIP), one Internet connection, one set of handouts for unlimited attendees in the same location, and access to the recording. (You may be required to download free software from Citrix GoToMeeting in order to participate in the webinar.) APBP accepts Visa, MasterCard or AMEX; payment should be made by noon on October 16.
