One more reason for all cyclists to be equipped with video cameras to document collisions or other traffic situations. More importantly, all cyclists should take cycling road safety classes where safe technique is taught such as proper lane placement when approaching intersections to prevent getting right hooked. The EBBC has offered such classes in the past. I took one of their Road I classes which involved spending the majority of a Saturday in a classroom and on Sunday various riding techniques were taught in a parking lot with an on the road test afterwords similar to a driving test. I wish classes like that were a requirement in grade school.

But for less experienced cyclists riding innocently in a bike lane, big truck drivers have to be accountable to avoid this type of accident. Vehicles are required to merge into the bike lane before turning, yielding to bikes already in the bike lane. If the truck is too large to make the turn from the bike lane, then the driver needs to make the turn very carefully and slowly. If the truck driver actually passed the cyclist before turning, or failed to signal the turn, then he is certainly at fault and should be held accountable.
