Ha! I love that you captioned the picture of me "Classic randonneuring type bike with canvas bags and multiple taillights". Is it that obvious? All things considered I'd say the opening day ride went pretty well, and the vast majority of the people partying it up at the end of the path were doing so good naturedly. Despite the crowds there were no serious incidents, and we are unlikely to see that many folks on the path at the same time again until the west span segment gets finished. We might be suggesting a speed feedback sign somewhere in the down-slope direction to encourage riders to stay under the 15 mph limit while heading back to Oakland. Since I had already been across the bridge earlier in the day, this time I focused more on interesting looking bikes and people. I must say the cyclists in the morning group were much better behaved than in the evening group. I don't think I've seen so many DUI cyclists since I was at Burning Man in 2005. Toward the end of the evening ride near the end of the path I found my space was invaded by a number of cyclists coming very close to me (all at walking speed as it was so congested). I left a bit before 20:00 and saw lots of cyclists and pedestrians still heading towards the bridge. All the police seemed to be at the entrance to the bridge, not on the bridge itself. Next time I'd recommend having police at the very end of the bridge to maintain some order and keep the public drinking and congestion down. As for the path itself, I thought it was great and plenty wide. It just needs some signage and enforcement to keep cyclists in their proper direction of travel lanes and the pedestrians in their lane.
