[Ebbc-Talk] 3rd lane of Richmond-San Rafael Bridge may be opened to cars

Bicyclists have been trying to gain access to the shoulder of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. There have been several studies on that issue, including a possible movable barrier.

But now there is a proposal to open the shoulder up to car travel:

Commission staff also listed using $70 million in Bay Area Toll Authority money to pay for adding a third lane on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge eastbound during evening peak periods.

Another lane would mean more traffic flowing onto the 4.2-mile span, helping clear Highway 101 in Marin during the evening commute. Originally, there were three lanes on each deck, but Caltrans has since permanently closed one lane in each direction for emergencies and maintenance.

"It is something that is being examined," said John Goodwin, commission spokesman, of the third lane.

The money also would go toward extending a Sir Francis Drake Boulevard auxiliary lane onto Interstate 580 and improving bicycle access in the area, according to Transportation Authority of Marin officials.
