Detailed online mapping from OS/BW

I've just found out about British Waterways' Waterscape website which
features a fast, scrollable mapping applet, similar to Google Maps.

However, unlike Google Maps (which, although technically impressive, has
fairly third-rate mapping), the mapping is detailed (based directly on
OS maps from a proper cartographer, it would be), including all the map
features you'd expect to see on a LandRanger map: in other words, as
well as roads, it includes paths, cycleways, railway lines (and stations
- with names), and, given the map client, canals!

And it's just as fast as Google Maps, too, if not faster. The only
downside I can see is that it doesn't seem possible to bookmark specific
locations (and you don't get funky satellite views), but for route
planning when you can't be bothered reaching for your paper maps, it
seems pretty useful.


To view the map:
go to: http://waterscape.com/
click on your location from the GB map near the top of the page
then click on "Interactive map"

You'll then get the map, centred on your area (but scrollable across
Great Britain), which you can then bookmark as a start point. 


[NB: requires modern browser and Flash. Tested on Linux/Firefox]
