Hello all

The whole messy story is posted below..... but, v quickly, I'm=20
trying to get me and my bike to Oban this Saturday... problem: a=20
landslide has closed the line between Ardlui and Crianlarich and the=20
alternative bus service ScotRail have laid on doesn't accomodate=20
bikes.... (even tho I have a passenger ticket and cycle reservation=20
booked weeks ago).

I know CityLink will only take bikes on their buses if (a) there's=20
space and (b) if the thing is in a bike bag... Neither is an option=20
for me.... Does anyone know of any other private operator - such as=20
the guy who conveys bikes from Inverness to Durness/Scrabster ? - who=20
could help out here ?

Thanks in advance

Hello
=20
I am looking for some assistance / clarification in respect of the=20
above.
=20
=20
Background:
=20
Around six weeks ago I booked (via ScotRail telesales) a passenger=20
return ticket and cycle reservation for travel on the 0833 Glasgow=20
Queen Street to Oban service on Sat 22/12/2006.
=20
On Monday (18/12/2006) I checked both the National Rail=20
(www.nationalrail.co.uk) and FirstScotrail (www.firstscotrail.com)=20
websites just to ensure there were no problems with the Glasgow -=20
Oban service (or anticipated problems). On both sites, however, the=20
following information was provided:
=20
=20
Landslips in the Ardlui and Upper Tyndrum areas=20=20
Time Reported: 14 Dec 12:28=20
Route Affected: Glasgow Queen Street - Dalmuir - Dumbarton Central -=20
Helensburgh - Arrochar & Tarbet - Ardlui - Crianlarich - Oban/Fort=20
William/Mallaig=20
TOC/s Affected: First ScotRail=20
Description: Train services between Glasgow Queen Street and=20
Oban/Mallaig are being disrupted due to landslips in the Ardlui and=20
Upper Tyndrum areas.=20

Train services between Glasgow Queen Street and Mallaig will=20
terminate at Arrochar. A replacement bus service will run to Fort=20
William where a train service will operate to Mallaig. Services from=20
Mallaig to Glasgow Queen Street will terminate at Bridge of Orchy=20
where a replacement bus service will run to Glasgow Queen Street.=20

Train services between Glasgow Queen Street and Oban will operate=20
between Glasgow Queen Street and Arrochar & Tarbet, and between=20
Crianlarich and Oban, in both directions. A replacement bus service=20
will run between Arrochar & Tarbet and Crianlarich.=20

Sleeper services to and from Fort William are not operating.=20
Alternative arrangements are being made by First ScotRail for=20
passengers who have already booked on these trains to use sleeper=20
services from/to Glasgow Central or Edinburgh.=20

It is estimated that this disruption will last for up to two weeks.
=20
=20
=20
=20
=20
=20
=20
=20=20

You will notice there is nothing in the above indicating cycles=20
cannot be conveyed on the bus service.
=20
I decided, however, to contact FirstScotrail to confirm the=20
travelling arrangements with a cycle. The email I sent is as follows:

Hello
=20
I am looking for some advice concerning travelling on the Glasgow to=20
Oban service (in view of the info below*). I have booked to travel=20
this coming Saturday with my bicycle (for which I have a reservation)=20

arrangements you have for conveying bicycles on the replacement bus=20
service ?

=20
=20
I received no email response from FirstScotRail so telephoned their=20
customer services to get clarification. FirstScotrail customer=20
services inform me - by telephone - that there is no provision for=20
the carriage of cycles on the replacement bus service and that I=20
won't be able to take my cycle on the journey that I have booked.
=20
I have a couple of issues with this response. First, if I had not=20
checked the FirstScotRail and National Rail websites and not been=20
aware of the problems and had just turned up at Glasgow Queen Street=20
station on Sat 22/12/2006 would FirstScotRail staff have turned me=20
away saying my cycle could not be accomodated ? (not very good=20
customer service considering I have already booked my ticket and=20
cycle reservation many weeks in advance). Second, on a number of=20
occasions (the most notably being in July 2006) FirstScotRail have=20
provided taxi services for cycles when circumstances dictated they=20
could not be accomodated on train services.=20
=20
In November 2002 a friend and I were travelling - with cycles - to=20
Kyle of Lochalsh but, due to various network problems, missed our=20
connection at Inverness. And what happened ? FirstScotRail provided a=20
taxi shuttle service between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh for my=20
friend and I and our bikes. More recently, in July 2006, while=20
travelling from Inverness to Thurso (again with a cycle)=20
FirstScotRail arranged taxi services for the cycle from Inverness to=20
Thurso due to "customer demand" (there wasn't, apparently, sufficient=20
cycle-carrying capacity on the Sprinter trains used on that service).=20
The passengers travelled on the trains and the cycles travelled on=20
the taxi service.
=20
So if it can be done in these circumstances then why not now ?
=20
I am really annoyed at FirstScotRail's response to this current=20
situation. I do, of course, realise that this situation has been=20
brought about by circumstances beyond FirstScotRail's control but=20
surely they should be able to accomodate all their customers'=20
requirements in getting them (and their bikes!) to their destinations.
=20
I would also draw your attention to the following information on the=20
FirstScotRail website:
=20
First ScotRail Cycle Rescue=20

You can have complete peace of mind when you travel First ScotRail=20
with your bike. If you are unable to complete the bike portion of=20
your journey as a result of an accident, vandalism or an irreparable=20
breakdown to your bike, First ScotRail Cycle Rescue will ensure you=20
and your bike (if appropriate) are transported at our discretion to:

=95 the nearest suitable cycle repair shop or
=95 the nearest appropriate railway station or
=95 the nearest car rental agency or
=95 the nearest overnight accommodation or
=95 your home, if nearer

Simply call freephone emergency helpline 08000 717 212 and we will=20
assist you according to our terms and conditions. You will need your=20
valid rail ticket to hand.

First ScotRail Cycle Rescue is operated by ETA Services Ltd. ETA=20
Services Ltd is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services=20
Authority (FSA).

I am sorry about the length of this email. But this trip has been=20
planned for some time to co-incide with a ferry journey from Oban in=20
respect of a Xmas holiday and if I can't take my cycle to Oban then I=20
will have to make extremely difficult alternative arrangements. I=20
just feel that FirstScotRail could do just a little more to help=20
their customers in this situation.

If there is anything you can do to resolve this situation it would be=20
very much appreciated.

Yours sincerely

=20

Hugh Spicer
