Options:

a) buy a laptop
b) bootable linux CD, perhaps. (I haven't tried one in years, but I assume
they're usable by now)

Why unable/unwilling? It would seem the most natural thing in the world to me.
If you're worried about them seeing where the config files are coming from that
you're cut-n-pasting, set up aliases to ssh you into those machines. Or just
copy all your configs that you think might ever be useful onto your home machine
(this is what I do).

I suppose you could also buy one of those USB drives and keep the configs on
that, too.
