I have been doing several different things to become more familiar with my fears. I did talk therapy with a pyschologist for nearly a year, which was most effective in just getting me fairly comfortable with expressing negative emotions. The physical practice of expressing them in a safe situation was freeing for me. I was less frightened of my feelings, and began to have more accurate predictions of their intensity and what would happen if I expressed them. I've been meditating for a year now, which also helps with the familiarity factor. One of the unexpected consequences is that I am less afraid of dying than I used to be. How do I know that? Because I finally bought life insurance and disability insurance. Why do I think it was meditating that helped with that? Well, it could have been other things, but I think that meditating helped me to become more connected with nothingness, and thus with my personal death. Fear of death is a basic human fear, and meditation helped me gain clarity on that fear. Another technique I've been using is guided journaling, where I answer a set of questions. I've been using some of the question sets from http://www.coping.org/growth/content.htm especially the sets on 'Fear of Success'. I suspect I'll be struggling with both becoming aware of, and dealing with my fears for the rest of my life. I look forward to reading other peoples suggestions. Yahoo!
