Turbo noise

I finally had time on a decent day to crawl under the car.  I did find a
loose exhaust shroud, but while that will probably fix an unrelated sound,
it's an unrelated sound.  No holes, etc., in the exhaust and the exhaust
manifold "seemed" OK.  Not the easy side of the engine to access.

I pulled the fresh air inlet off and was just barely able to feel inside.
There is noticeable play in the shaft.  Not a tremendous amount, but I can
feel it.  I've never even looked at one up close, much less inspected one.
How much play is permissible?
