Cruise Switch

I have a cruise control switch which kept dropping out cruise.  After
not driving the car for 5 weeks, now it is not working at all.

The vehicle is a 99.5 Jetta TDI.  I can find controls which look more
like the ones on my 2002 and 2003, but not the 99.5.  One person who 
professed only novice knowledge told me that he thought the switches 
were interchangable, and that to a degree, the switch determines the 
features (like reset, speed down, etc.)

Does anyone know for certain?
