Yeah you do.  I think I had an earlier car in mind. maybe a 99 jetta...  augh, it's all a blur... 

I had the B4 door apart once, and the window regulator is a real fun thing to work around. I think mine was a wire rotted off the plug on the module, instead of the module itself.  It's certainly a complicated piece for what it does.

Says you do have to remove door panel and window regulator, the whole works.
