Despite VW not spec'ing a sealant, the factory DID use hylomar or similar
on all of the factory head gaskets I have disassembled. I have found that
using a very light coating of hylomar spray on each side of the gasket, the
head and block eliminates the pesky weeping leaks that often occur at the
pressurized oil channel and the oil returns at the corners. The spray cans
cost approx. $20 and last for approx 3 head gaskets. Last can I got off
eBay.
