2001 Golf MKiv door lock issue

hi all

still dealing w/ busted driver's door lock (won't close)

getting tired of driving around with my arm 'casually' hanging out the 
window (to hold the door shut)

removed the door panel so far

clearly need to remove inner door panel now

I have manual window cranks, whcih *maybe* makes this easier?

Qs:

- do I have to remove wondo glass first?

- do I have to remove window regulator?

- do I have to remove door locking module in order to diagnose the problem?

- how do I diagnose? what should I look for? and DIYs you can recommend?
