it is not easy to pinpoint but the high point of papua
new guinea & the most prominent internal tripoint of
that country
as formed by chimbu & madang & western highlands
provinces
aka pg2chmdwh
is evidently at the peak of mount wilhelm
whatever that may precisely mean
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Wilhelm
http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/features/mapcenter/map.aspx?TextLatitude=39.45&TextLongitude=-98.907&TextAltitude=0&TextSelectedEntity=39070&SearchEnc=false&MapStyle=Comprehensive&MapSize=&MapStyleSelectedIndex=0&searchTextMap=mount+wilhelm&MapStylesList=Comprehensive
so look for this shifty point on both the above &
below maps
just wnw of goroka
http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/australia/papua_newguinea_pol89.jpg
but just to give you an idea how shifty it is
this 1963 map shows mt wilhelm as the tripoint of
eastern highlands with madang & western highlands
provinces
or pg2ehmdwh
http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/ams/new_guinea/txu-oclc-6552576-sb55-5.jpg
a few years before chimbu was carved out of eastern
highlands & inserted there
but anyway
would you guess this best known visitation pic is a
multiple class a
http://airsafaris.com.au/mtwilhelm/index.html
or is the true tripoint actually situated on top of
the marker sign
& did these folks thus neglect to climb all the way up
to it
determining & reaching this tripoint looks more
challenging than just climbing the mountain itself
http://zaou.c.oka-pu.ac.jp/kyoukan/teramoto/wilhelm.htm
maybe it would be easy tho if we could just read what
the sign says
& yikes
it also just occurred to me
maybe they werent even trypointers but lost clavers or
something
