Lyceum, buddhism

Hey Marcus,

I'm not ready to take responsibility for the education
of a child. Mainly because if you take one out of the
assembly line we call school, it will be very
difficult fitting them into the cookie-cutter life
available afterwards. Economics dictates here.

At this time I'm more concerned with adults (to my
great delight, Colin calls them/us "emancipated
children" :)

This is a primer on Buddhism. I've written this
particular outline but the source was my favorite,
Huston Smith. I don't know how many books you or
anyone interested in Buddhism have read, but sometimes
we find ourselves knowing less afterwards than before.
But essentially Buddhism (the original, now called
Theravada or Hinayana Buddhism) is this page. That's
it! I don't know why there are 200-300 page books on
Buddhism.

If you're interested, and do make it down to New York
City, I can teach you or anyone Buddhism and Hinduism
in about an hour. I'll teach it to you in a way you'll
never forget them because you'll understand and know
how they are related. There is a high (if not perfect)
correlation between understanding and recall.

I'm not saying that one should practice those
religions but they are parts of the world. To know the
whole you must understand the parts. I'm still working
on Judaism, Christianity and Islam. That will cover
the World Religion part.

I think you are focusing more on self-examination and
self-understanding than I am. You are right of course,
that is very important. But trying to understand
Psychology without knowing History and Sociology can
be quite difficult, if not impossible.

In my school, the first dictum is "Know thy World" and
the second, "Know thy Self". Getting to know the world
is a much easier task than knowing oneself which is a
lifelong goal. That is why one needs to build
thinking-muscles in looking out to see within.

the "cooperative learning" aspect of it sounds like a
really good idea.  In my opinion, the kids should not
only summarize the books, but they should do something
that you can never get a child do *honestly* do in
school -say how it affected them.  Where are you
located?  In fact, where are all of you located?
