First here's a relevant site:(Positive Futures

also worth looking at.

...

I'm announcing something I've been calling the Vision
Research Project (VRP).

http://carfreeuniverse.org/Members/colin/vision000/

The VRP is at present about learning how to express
visions in ways that inspire others to help you
realize those visions. Later on I may start looking at
visions throughout history and their effects.

It will take some time to read all the documents
listed there, so save it for then!

The rest of this email is a ramble--perhaps disregard
it. I feel there is some value in it so I haven't cut
it though.

Colin :)

The motive for discussion on the OurCultureOurCapitol
list is, I think, to help self & others work together
to attain a desired state (that cathedral-building
feeling).

The Vision Research Project is about expressing what
that state is and how to get there in ways that will
inspire others to try to get there themselves.

In my reading in the past few months, I've found
helpful descriptions of that desired state in many
places... Presumably these people describe it well
because they know it: Qigong masters go on about the
Qigong state. Wordsworth, and others poets go on about
their experiences.

Connection and Communion

I'm looking at the state as being not just that basic
excitement in creating or feeling something beautiful,
but also being in a community with others sharing that
state or at least the goal of that state... And
eventually the people and physical space and bodies of
that community should come to reflect and further
inspire the inner state responsible for the outer
beauty.

It is possible to find that sort of community among
the great (and dead) Romantic poets! And, I'm also
willing to guess, among the elite and accomplished in
many present-day disciplines. But not only there.

Where does that leave me and you?

I believe I'd take well to teaching writing or
literature on some level (joining a sort of secular
priesthood), and I'm going after education to help me
do that. I also continue to consider how I might write
something someone might pay to read some day
(Something on the role of vision in individual and
societal development?). I wonder if I wouldn't be
better off saving my money and my time, and trying to
write that great thing... But, taking the lit classes
puts me in a similarly oriented community of living
people.

I also see I use literature as a way to live in
beautiful and fantastic places in my mind, if I cannot
do so in my person.

And you?

And how can we help each other?

I'm leaning toward the sharing & discussion of
carefully considered & compellingly-expressed visions.

So that's my intro to the VRP. More of the documents
can be read by following the links to:

Colin

"Prophets of Nature, we to [Man] will speak a lasting
inspiration, sanctified by reason, blest by faith:
what we have loved others will love, and we will teach
them how, instruct them how the mind of Man becomes a
thousand times more beautiful than the earth on which
he dwells ... in beauty exalted, as it is itself of
quality and fabric more divine." [from the last 10
lines of Wordsworth's The Prelude]

Here's a bit of Campbell:
p104 Myths to live by by Joseph Campbell
All societies are evil, sorrowful, inequitable, and so
they will always be. So if you really want to help
this world, what you will have to teach is how to live
in it in the joyful sorrow and sorrowful joy of the
knowledge of life as it is.

(but read more of him or the analysis docs in the VRP
before complaining of his social conservativeness)
