Well, a very crucial set of software connectors is the socket API, which is pretty much universal and derived from a single source (the Windows version is a bit different but not very).
One of the most important connectors is getaddrinfo() which as far as I am concerned has a major pin missing that wrecks most attempts to solve the multihoming problem. Details are probably out of scope, but it's an accident of history for sure.
