							I suppose that President Obama is nowhere near the willingness or unwillingness to learn a foreign language; it’s simply the mentality and understanding of people who choose either way. 
People have been always learning a language that would be strategically beneficial; why would one living in Australia learn German or Spanish? It is not strategically important in the region. The same applies to all people (not only native English speakers) as the geographical location and/or significance in the region play major roles in choosing which language to choose. 
I was learning Esperanto (used http://www.lernu.net) years ago, but I simply do not support the idea of Esperanto as nobody is fluent at a native speaker’s level which aggravates the learning process. Personally, I think that English is not that difficult to learn and it is worth being a lingua franca. Imagine if French was world’s language – it is genuinely impossible to learn it perfectly. 
And I am speaking from the perspective of a person, who speaks 6 languages and is able to understand 8.
