It is an urban myth that English has become the World's lingua franca - 3.7 billion people do not speak it. More people now speak Mandarin Chinese and Spanish!
The biggest air crash in the World was caused by the failure of English, as the language of air traffic control!   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgrRG6mriLU The cause of this was due to a linguistic misunderstanding.
Another near-miss happened in JFK airport, as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ru8IbRaHC2g
The decline of English is also seen on the internet. When the world wide web began, 85% was in English. That percentage has now shrunk to 35%.
