Sumoo is a form of Japanese wrestling. The Esperanto Sumoo was the idea of
Japanese Esperantist Hori Jasuo. The idea is that instead of wrestling with
someone else, you challenge yourself. The challenge is to read a book in
Esperanto every day for two weeks (or this July, only for one week).

So how do you take part in the Esperanto Sumoo? First of all, choose your
book, and then decide how many pages you could manage to read every day.
You don't have to aim to finish the book in the time available. It's enough
that you read a certain number of pages every day.

Inform Hori Jasuo that you want to take part, tell him the name and author,
and how many pages you plan to read every day. He also asks you to send

Via nomo, sekso, luktista nomo (pseudonimo), urbo, lando, retadreso, titolo
> de legota libro kaj kvanto da pag^oj por unu tago.
>

The "luktista nomo" means that you give yourself a nickname for the
purposes of the Sumoo - i.e. a name or word in Esperanto. It could be your
own name (I just call myself Anna).

Choose a book at your own level, and a realistic number of pages - if you
think you could only manage 1 or 2 pages a day, that's perfectly OK. Of
course, you can always read more, but if you read less, you'll fail the
challenge. (Tip: I prefer to underestimate and read more, rather than be
too ambitious and fail!)

Hori Jasuo will assign you a "prizorganto" (carer), who will ask you how
you're doing from time to time. The idea is you note a "pearl" for each day
you read at least the agreed number of pages, so at the end of two weeks
you should have a string of 15 pearls like this: ooooo ooooo ooooo. If you
miss a few days, you'll have ooxoo oooox ooooo.

The July Sumoo is only for 8 days from 2nd to 9th July, because the World
Congress and various other Esperanto events are coming up.

Don't think the Sumoo is only for beginners. A lot of well known
Esperantists, including Hori himself, take part regularly. It's a great way
of making sure you read at least six Esperanto books a year. If you don't
finish during the 8 or 15 days of the Sumoo, you can always continue
reading when the Sumoo is over.

Hoping plenty of you decide to take part!
Anna
