Greeting of Audrey Azoulay, General Director of UNESCO,  to the Universala
Kongreso of the Universal Esperanto Association,  Lisbon, July 29, 2018.


 I am pleased to be able to send these supportive words to the participants
of the 103rd world Congress of the Universal Esperanto Association.

 You have the chance to convene in the magnificent city of Lisbon, a city
tied to the vast history which has been constructed at the crossroads of
diverse cultures, a city open to the world located at the western edge of
the Iberian peninsula.

 I have no doubt that the exceptional setting will inspire fruitful
exchanges.

 As you know, UNESCO has supported the instruction of Esperanto for many
years.

 Our Organization shares with the Esperanto movement common values: the aim
of building a peaceful world, empathy among the peoples, respect for
cultural diversity, solidarity across borders.

 The cement of these values is the capability to dialog, to listen, and to
share with each other.

 The languages are the thing that makes this dialog possible. They are the
crucial instrument that enables us to accomplish this mission, and that
also are essential in defending our values.

 We must defend the languages, especially the rare languages, the
indigenous languages, which we now know are disappearing at the rate of one
every two weeks, an irreplaceable loss of our human heritage.

 We must also defend multilingualism not only by appropriate public
policies but also in the virtual space of the internet so that we preserve
the linguistic and cultural diversity of all groups, each with their own
history, identity, and particular things symbolic of their original
community.

 That activity of UNESCO is also yours in that you do not aim to decrease
the number of languages spoken in the world.  You represent the contrary
view about communication in all languages, major or minor, and to establish
one community of speakers regardless of their economic, political, or
cultural influence.

  To speak Esperanto is to adopt a cosmopolitan outlook, to be a citizen of
the world - but without renouncing one’s particular attachments.

Your elected theme for your congress this year is “Cultures, Languages,
Global Unification;  Where Do We Go Now?”

 The elected direction is certainly that which your Movement and our
Organization has carried on for years, to become more and more engaged to
save and preserve that essential part of the nonmaterial human heritage,
the languages, to defend linguistic diversity and to promote multilingual
education.

 Thus we will successfully build a more open, more inclusive and peaceful
world.

  “Many voices, one world” that is the slogan of our well-known organ,
UNESCO COURIER.

  “Multaj voĉoj, unu mondo” is how that ideal is translated into Esperanto,
the ideal that you and we have - and which now is exhibited in the
Esperanto version of our review, UNESKO-KURIERO.

  Finally I want to convey, in the name of UNESCO, my cordial good wishes
for the success of your Congress.
