Re: Vivisimo clustering FindLaw results

Someone pointed out Vivisimo to me a few months ago. It doesn't pick up
quite as much as does Google or Altavista, but that might be a result of
its robots needing more time to canvass the web.

It appears that it does a search within each identiifed site to
identify common words. My first deep foray into Vivisimo was to put my
surname in it (family history being a hobby) because the surname, though
rare, is identified with an airplane and with several celebrities.
Attempts to limit the searches in Google or Altavista pose the risk of
missing something that is wanted.

As best I could tell, if the word airplane or aircraft was in the web
site it was put into a category that I think was called airplane.
Several pages that went into that category were not webpages of Maule
Air, its dealers or people posting messages about Maule aircraft. They
included stories involving someone with the surname in which an airplane
was mentioned.

Still, it was nice to see the stuff classified in an organized manner.
It wasn't perfect, but whose file cabinets are that well arranged? (The
fun part was that I ended up in my own category, hahaha!)

I doubt Vivisimo would disclose exactly how it does what it does,
because it is in a competitive position. There may be, however, articles
in the computer magazine world or on-line that describes the process
more descriptively than what I'm surmising.

Since Orion Wolff brought up Vivisimo (welcome, Orion!), I'd like to
throw 
out for discussion today how it refines FindLaw, even though Vivisimo
is on 
the schedule for tomorrow. I just ran "nominee corporation" through 
Vivisimo's FindLaw page at http://vivisimo.com/demos/FindLaw.html. The

results came back in two columns. The left column displayed the top 160

results for the search. Each search result had a heading that was 
hyperlinked to the underlying document, an excerpt from the document 
containing highlighted search terms, and the URL.  The left column 
clustered the results into a series of folders with headings like
"Nevada," 
"Nominee Services," "Offshore" and "Delaware Corporation." The number
of 
results under each heading appeared in parentheses next to the heading.

When I opened a folder by clicking on it, I then saw a series of 
sub-folders with headings and the number of results under each.

Has anyone else tried this?

Can you explain what Vivisimo is doing and how it does it, Orion?
