Stuart,

I hope it's not too bold of me to suggest that they purchase some brand
of digital library of forms/routine legal paperwork on CD-ROM for
whatever area they intend to practice in.

The only thing worse than standing in the line at the clerk's office to
stock up on forms is actually putting them in a typewriter to complete
them. 

For a few hundred dollars in any given state they should be able to get
all the documents they need for their practice.

Here are a few suggestions on the hardware side:

- Laptop computer (I have used ThinkPads for about 10 years and have
been
pleased with them)
- UPS/surge protector
- 20" (or larger) flat screen monitor (your monitor is your workplace so
get
one with as much real estate as you can afford; Dell has a very nice one
with a USB hub built right into it)
- wireless keyboard and wireless optical mouse
- adjustable keyboard tray (think ergonomics)
- high quality office chair (ditto)
- color printer (great for business cards)
- cordless phone (5.8 GHz so it does not create problems for the
wireless
network)
- decent headset to go with the cordless phone (no one looks cute with
one
shoulder permanently 4 inches higher)
- convergence handheld - cell phone/PDA/email (I have been happy with my
recently-acquired Treo 600 and I know other folks who use the Blackberry
cell phone or the most recent Kyocera; each, of course, has its
strengths
and weaknesses)
- car adapter (so you can plug it into a power outlet in a car and then
you
can plug laptop, cell phone charger, printer, etc. into it)
- thumb drive (great for transferring files)

In late June, I will be doing a presentation at a program designed to 
assist lawyers going out on their own.  Not surprisingly, I will be 
addressing various tech-type issues.  The tenative title for the 
presentation is:  "Ten or Twenty Ways to Spend Your 
Money on Things You Didn't Think You Really Need, but Really Do"

Any suggestions from this group would be greatly appreciated.  I 
think one of the important pieces of equipment any new practitioner 
needs is a good scanner with a paper feed.  Any specific 
suggestions as to the type of scanner that might fill this bill would be

particularly appreciated.
