RE: My June Program

I initially thought I could get by without a copier.  Having tried both the
scanner/printer approach and a multi-function machine (Brother MFC 9700), I
find there is value in simply being able to copy a piece of paper without
having to run it through a computer.  Sometimes I just want a quick copy and
I don't need to worry about retaining the information for use later on.
Sometimes I want a copy when I do not have a computer turned on or do not
want to tie up the computer processing and printing the image.

As to faxes, I have been using eFax for incoming faxes (it is great to have
them show up in email, either on my computer or on a handheld, and then
either eFax or the multifunction machine for outgoing faxes, depending on
factors such where I am (I used eFax to send a fax from someone else's
conference room week; the recipient required a fax, I could do the whole
thing on my computer, and I keep a record of what I did), whether I want to
keep a copy, and sheer convenience (sometimes it still is easier to send a
fax from the MFC that from my computer).

One thought occurred to me with respect to the June 26th program 
that I am giving for the Maryland State Bar Association--New solo's 
do not need either (i) a fax machine or (ii) a photocopier.  Listen to 
my arguments on these issues and then give me some input (or, if 
you like, some contra-arguments).

As to a fax machine, either Maxemail or e-fax work better than a fax 
for incoming faxes and, tied to a good scanner, work better on 
outgoing faxes.  I think that, in the main, they're cheaper as well, 
since one need not have a dedicated telephone line and there are 
no long distance charges.  

The photocopier issue might be more controversial, but the 
argument goes like this:  "A good high speed printer is cheaper than 
a photocopier.  You need a good high speed scanner anyway and if 
you get both a high speed printer and a high speed scanner, you 
effectively have a photocopier.  Of course, this can't process big 
jobs, but if you have one of those, go to Kinko's or one of their 
competitors."  

Any candidates for the printer?  (I assume that the Visoneer 9750 is 
probably sufficient to act as the scanner.)
