The Fujistu 4110E is about $450 and, while not a heavy duty unit, has one touch, paper to pdf-on-the-screen convenience.  I've used other scanners and this is the first one that allows scanning as a reliably seamless, brainless task -- ie no secretaries, no getting up from the desk, no dialogue boxes to click through, no paper jams.

I am not convinced that a scanner belongs on the "really need" list.
However, if it does, the Fujitsu 4120C is an amazing little machine. It's
more expensive than people (including me) usually want to spend, but it
makes up for that by working very, very nicely and causing no trouble (at
least on my desk). They're around $1000 new (I understand reconditioned
models can be found on Ebay), but sheet-feed quickly and easily and scan
both side of the page in a single pass. They can handle papers of varying
widths and lengths and it comes with the full version of Acrobat 5.0, which
is worth something right there. 

I am experimenting with "paperless filing" with the Fujitsu and Paperport 9
- I'm not yet convinced it's the way to go, but it's a lot closer than I've
ever seen things before.

This Fujitsu has changed my mind about scanning - until I got it, my
reaction to the issue was to say "well, scanning is a disaster unless you
can afford a really nice scanner, and nobody I know can afford a really nice
scanner, so forget about it." That's not true any more.

In late June, I will be doing a presentation at a program designed to assist
lawyers going out on their own.  Not surprisingly, I will be addressing
various tech-type issues.  The tenative title for the presentation is:  "Ten
or Twenty Ways to Spend Your Money on Things You Didn't Think You Really
Need, but Really Do"

Any suggestions from this group would be greatly appreciated.  I think one
of the important pieces of equipment any new practitioner needs is a good
scanner with a paper feed.  Any specific suggestions as to the type of
scanner that might fill this bill would be particularly appreciated.
