Video Splitters

I have a video splitter that I used with great success when I had two 
old-style monitors.  Now, my primary monitor is flat screen.

When I hooked it up, the image on the flat screen was not as sharp 
as when the connection went directly from the computer.

Any suggestions as to how to either remedy the problem or what 
brand of splitter might work better.
