Archives for Net-Lawyers at FindLaw and YahooGroups

Hi David:

Thanks for directing some of that net-citizen, net-booster enthusiasm of
yours in the direction of Network-Lawyers. That was a very thoughtful post
on searching Google resources.

I was thinking that there were some archives for Net-Lawyers left at a
mirror of the list somewhere. So I tracked the archives down at FindLaw
which mirrored Network-Lawyer message traffic in their web-based archives
from March, 1997 through August, 2001. I found over 7,000 messages at:

http://legalminds.lp.findlaw.com/list/net-lawyers/

I am going to check on searching the FindLaw archives and will report back
on my findings for the record here in Network-Lawyers.

We should probably give some thought to promoting the use of that resource
including the other legal lists lodged there. The lists archived include
about 6,500 messages from another favorite of mine, the now inactive,
Dispute-Res, moderated by Professor Ethan Katsh. The 6,500 or so messages
in the FindLaw mirror archive for Dispute-Res, cover almost 7 years,
November 1996 to December 2002.

Again thanks,

John

P.S. There are also some mirror archives for Net-Lawyers and Dispute-Res
and, I suspect other legal lists, over at YahooGroups. I will be checking
those out as well. J.

Once upon a time, Lew Rose moderated a very well known and popular
discussion group named Net-Lawyers, a list that I was a member of and
contributed to. The archives no longer exist as far as I know on the
Listserv server that held them at the time the list flourished. Lew Rose
ultimately decided to close the list. Many useful and important legal
resources and issues had been discussed there including, as noted in a
prior post, Word vs Word Perfect and the famous reveal codes issue.

My posting to the original Net-Lawyers, whose archives are still extant
either completely or partially in the huge archives of information
maintained by Findlaw, was sometimes quite colorful if nevertheless
reserved as this sample will definitively prove.

But all good things must come to an end, unless some other people decide
to continue them under a variant name, such as Network-Lawyers.

So I joined and posted the message below in response to a personal

I have signed onto the list at Yahoo Groups. I have moved on to running a
list of my own since my Net-Lawyer membership on the prior list and I am
glad to see that the list has continued. Big events and seminars are
fine, but there is room for smaller day by day sharing of information,
news, resources in both print, online and internet. I think lawyers, like
many professionals, need to know about sources outside of their field as
much use may be made of these tools in the right circumstances. Lawyers
may be inclined to use Lexis-Nexis and Westlaw when dealing with a medical
malpractice case, for example, but how many lawyers turn to Medline,
CINAHL, Journals @ OVID, HealthStar, Academic Search Premier, ABI Inform,
Social Science Abstracts, PsychInfo, and so forth for information and
background regarding the issues of a malpractice case from points of view
other than strictly law journals. How many lawyers use Google Scholar or
now Google Print for content on a malpractice or other legal fields or
issues for information. What about Google Print.

Now consider these two juxtaposed questions. How much does one search
cost in Lexis or in Westlaw? Now how much does an annual subscription to
all of the Google searching services cost in a package deal. Any lawyers
out there who need information and are operating on a tight budget?

If internet resources and publications and news are important to you in a
range of subject fields, you are welcome to have a look at Net-Gold on
