Michael, I have the DelRey/Ballantine edition of "Chessmen of Mars", ISBN 0-345-27838-0, first printing 1963, 13th printing December 1981. My copy also says "meaningly" at the end of that paragraph. It's right in the very middle of page 214 in my copy.
