In a sense you may have answered your own question. It is probably the
most open eReader platform of the current eInk generation. In terms of
performance I believe it is on par with other first generation eInk
devices. If battery life is a consideration there has been
considerable disappointment over this. Since you want to tinker this
is most likely the best choice. The price has kept me away from it but
it is being marketed to the business community.
