Kindle in-stock date now Dec. 5

Over the past couple of days, the in-stock date has changed from Nov. 29 to Dec. 3 and
now to Dec. 5, indicating continuing orders being placed for it. One news source (CNET)
has reported on this (and noted that it's occurred despite "much skepticism and some
downright harsh criticism"), but Amazon itself doesn't seem to have issued a press release
about it, so I'm inclined to think that this is a real issue of orders exceeding stock on hand
rather than a contrived shortage to generate publicity.

What interests me about this is that Amazon clearly timed the launch of the Kindle to
coincide with the Christmas shopping season and apparently had plenty of advance time
(perhaps as much as a year) to prepare to ship the Kindle in quantity. Certainly if they
can't fill demand for delivery by Dec. 24 or 25 they'll start to lose potential sales as people
opt for other Christmas gifts, and not just sales of Kindles but of Kindle ebooks as well,
since any purchaser or recipient of a Kindle is likely to buy at least one or two ebooks
right away to see how they like them.

While it's still a little early to be sure yet, I'd say the signs are pointing to the Kindle being
a major success, surprising as that might be to those of us jaded TeBC members who
remember earlier highly-touted ebook readers that flopped. After all, as Jeff Bezos is
quoted by the New York Times as saying at the introduction of the Kindle, "If you go back
in time, the landscape is littered with the bodies of dead e-book readers."
