Actually, that may not be true any more.
To whit, after my son advised me to shop at Amazon for old movies, I got hooked and now consider them to be one of the best sources around for VHS tapes, DVDs, music, small appliances, electronics and gadgets of every description. At the same time, while I find the Amazon site hugely entertaining, especially the customer reviews and lists, I seldom, if ever, go there for books.
Compared to the movies, stocking stuffers, CDs and electronic devices I've bought at Amazon during the past couple of years, I can count the print books I've ordered there on one hand and still have fingers left over. Since the books in question were a couple of rare out-of-print titles from a third party seller, they weren't even, technically from Amazon at all. And that leads me to suspect that I'm not in the minority when it comes to my shopping habits there.
In the meantime, I'm rather pleased that Amazon has finally woken up to the realization that, far from being a passing fad, ebooks and epublishers are here to stay and actually constitute a highly respectable secondary market for them.
Re the Kindle, I'm taking a wait and see attitude. While the device looks very nice, (as well it should), I consider the introductory price more a mite steep; especially when I recall the NuvoMedia Rocket, EBookman and Gemstar hoopla during *their* ereaders' respective launches and what became of *them*.
As for the claim that the landscape is 'littered with dead ereaders', my NuvoMedia Rocket, Gemstar 1100 and Ebookwise 1150 are all alive and well, thank you, and I have no trouble finding compatible titles for any of them.
OTOH, because I can't access the MobiPocket DRM titles on my hp jornada, (I have to reinstall the program every time its battery dies, which happens on a regular basis), I have serious reservations about the Kindle ereader's future viability, being that the Kindle titles are exclusive to that device.
As others have pointed out, the Kindle ebook prices are not only *not* cheap, especially when they're compared to Baen Books or Fictionwise, some are horribly expensive. A couple of times, I wasn't sure I was reading those prices right and had to take a second look.
