My suggestion would be that you pay attention to which books have been
made into movies:

L. M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series, for example, has been
popular for several years, because movies were made of it. Similarly,
Frances Hodgson Burnett's novels have been filmed a number of times.
If you recommend classic books that have media tie-ins, your daughter
can be reading books that her friends are probably reading too.

Another thing you should be aware of is that children usually read up,
agewise, rather than down. A twelve-year-old is most likely starting
to tackle young adult and adult novels (as your comment about "Lord of
the Rings" suggests). So you might just see whether she likes classic
public domain novels for adults.
