But...  Suppose that "books" themselves are changing, to be performed
works, rather than passive to-be-read works.  Suppose that many kids
who would have been good readers aren't learning to read (videos
instead -- see the NEA report at
http://www.nea.gov/research/ToRead.pdf), and that everyone is learning
to multitask, so that many former readers would instead, say, listen
to books read aloud in the car.  Suppose that it becomes very easy for
a writer to produce a video of a screenplay, perhaps with a bottled
computerized set of actors and scenes.  Suppose that there was some
sort of intangible packaging and sales format for a book, so that
writers were freed from the constraints of physical production, and
further, that you've got some kind of free "magic pipeline",
connecting the readers directly to the authors, so that delivery
issues go away.

Combine that with Jobs' stated admiration for Gretzky's "I skate to
where the puck is going to be, not where it's at" philosophy, and I
think you can argue that iTunes is *already* a book store -- it's just
that most people haven't noticed yet.
