One reason for an advance is so the author knows with utter veracity
how many copies the press thinks they will sell. If they offer say
$30,000 then they genuinely believe the can sell 10s of thousands of
copies.

These days many small POD and epresses sell less than 100 copies of a
book in the first year. So life time royalties will be ... well, low.
No royalties is low risk for the publishers many of whom invest little
in each book, release a great many books and make a good profit
from 'farming' authors who individually earn next to nothing.
