Technically, an advance is not recoverable for non-performance... UNLESS it is written into 
the contract that it can be.  Once you accept that and sign on that line, you bought into 
that provision.  But I'd say such a provision is rare.

Normally, advances are given against royalties.  If I give you an advance of $5,000 and 
your book sales in the first year only produce what would have been $500 in royalties... 
then I made a bad decision about paying you such a big advance, because you earned 
significantly less for us both than I anticipated.  You didn't earn out your advance.  And, 
it's almost certain that you will get a MUCH smaller advance from me next time, if I sign 
you on again at all.
