Books are available in several sizes. You'll have to choose a size,
first...which means seeking out the sizes the individual printers do. For
instance, many trade paperbacks run about 7.5-8X5 (almost all on my shelf
are measuring out 8X5). For the book, you'd want to make the pages that
size. For instance, if the book will be 8X5, the pages should be 8X5. You'll
want your margins at least .5, top and bottom (I suggest .7, if you're also
going to have a header/footer). You'll want to place mirror margins on the
sides with .75 margin (for a short book) or .88 margin (for a long book) on
the inside and .5 or so on the outside. I find it easier to make two files,
at the start. One will be e-book, with uniform margins around. The other
will be formatted for the printers.
The lowest number of pages I've seen in a perfect-bound book is about 50.
Whether or not you have to have the multiples of 4 depends on the printer.
I'd go for trade paper, personally. It's heavier, doesn't rip as easily and
is clean, crisp and unblemished, in comparison to mass market pulp paper.
