As Tony explained, the EPIC bookstore features books by EPIC members  
as a member benefit. So does Broad Universe, although theirs is simply  
a catalog rather than a bookstore. As for the "dead authors," I  
believe it's part of the agreement when you sign with Fictionwise for  
a branded store that you agree to carry a selection of their own  
public domain books.

It's hardly worth getting your knickers in a twist over it, Ed,  
because the fact the books are purchasable is just icing; I'm not sure  
if any of the members actually link to the store since they'll make  
more per copy sold by linking to their respective publishers. The EPIC  
bookstore is simply there as a convenience, on the off chance someone  
will stumble on the EPIC site and want to see what the organization's  
members have produced. It's not actively promoted, nor is it  
considered a major revenue source. However, you can hear the howls  
from coast to coast if a member discovers his/her titles aren't there.  
Whether that means it's "an ego thing" or just that people expect  
their member benefits to be provided forthwith is your choice.

In short, the bookstore is just an extra perk you get for joining.  
It's not meant to make a lot of money, but the membership asked for it  
and EPIC had the money to set it up, so there it is.
