The real test would be to do a fresh install of Mobipocket on a 
new device, which (as I understand it) will give you a new PID.
Then try using an ebook on this install. If the book appears, 
then they have eliminated the need to even track the PID at all.

In other words - they may have stopped using TPM (also known as 
DRM).

They may decided that tracking PIDs was more effort - for both 
them and customers - than the benefits gained. In particular, 
they may have found that a large fraction of their support calls 
- a noticeable cost - can likely be eliminated by dropping PID 
requirements.

If there are "un-PID" utilities commonly available - which 
reduces the value of the PID-based protection - then they may 
have decided that the benefit of PIDs and the associated 
protections simply weren't worth the costs.
