The Dublin Core standard already exists. What would you need that it doesn't
cover.

It seems like this thread is headed towards defining a title information
exchange format.

We talked a bit about how this could be useful on Book Futures
([email protected]), and I think I'll post again now on this
subject.

The physical book industry has evolved just such a standard (its called
Onyx, it is between 5 and 10 years old, iirc), after working with a variety
of mechanisms that give book information over the years (library cataloging
standards, the data transfer standards used by Ingram Book and B&T, etc.)
Together, these standards mean that large bookstore chains and online stores
can collect information about nearly every book with a US-sourced ISBN.

As we discussed on Book Futures, the lack of this kind of information is one
of the reasons that online ebook retailers don't offer so much of what is
available, and what they do list lacks all the information that might be
desired, as Jon Jermey observes.


So, if you want to continue this exercise, may I suggest that it be done
with an eye towards developing an Onyx-like standard? Something that allows
ebook producers, reviewers and retailers to exchange the basic information
about a title?
