I'm sure others have done this, but perhaps not as simply, from my POV.
You've heard of Baen's Free Library, using free reads to entice readers to
the print books. I've talked about Fictionwise's e-book give-away of the
first book in a series for a week, in an effort to increase sales of the
series, as a whole in e-book (which worked well for me). And, several
publishers, including Phaze (the sensual/erotic arm of Mundania), have free
reads on the site permanently (or until the author asks them removed), in an
effort to do the same. Now, ARe (AllRomanceeBook) is doing something
similar.

ARe is, in fact, allowing either authors to directly query free downloads to
ARe. ARe will contract the right to give these shorts and novellas away
(must be longer than 2000 words in length). They will further format and
provide a cover for the shorts. No one makes money. No one takes money, but
hopefully, it will increase sales for the participating authors.

The other option they have is having the authors submit said works directly
to the publisher, if the publisher is willing to format, cover and load them
onto the ARe site...and the publisher already sells books via ARe. Again, no
one makes money. No one takes money. It just downloads from ARe as a free
read.

In ARe's case, you have to add the book to a cart and check out, as if you
were purchasing. They give you a link directly on the web page. You can read
on the screen, but since protected PDFs may not be able to download twice,
you should save the book to your computer.

In Phaze's case, there is no prompt to add the free downloads (Flares) to a
cart or check out. You click on the book, and the PDF opens in the browser.
You are never required to download and save the story, if you don't wish
to...or can't. You can do it, if you wish to.
