book marketing - ideas sought

I have been asked to prepare some [alternative?] ideas for a book marketing plan [cum business plan, cum sales plan], and seek any help, advice or links/contacts/etc to sort out possibilities.

The genre is humourous science fiction and the first of four is ready in a series that follows the (mis-) adventures of the central character.   A number of other books that associate with these are also part written or planned.   While the author is English the book (series) is expected to appeal widely, finding interest in the US and other markets - as one expects with science fiction.

The author is open to all ideas and recognises that publishing is changing.   While not keen to self-publish they have not ruled it out.   There may be limitations regarding the ability to make appearances, book signings and so on, so there is keenness for any ideas/advice on promotion that does not include those.

There is no set position on when to publish [nor whether digital, paper or a mix], though I think that ebook would be at least the first step in bringing it to market.

I really do welcome all comments, cautions as well as ideas.    I obviously welcome direction to blogs, articles and books;  I am trying to bring the very latest together for this.
