The subsidy and vanity presses require the authors to pay  
substantially ALL of those costs. Or they make their money by selling  
books to the author.

It's really, really rare that a publisher hits an author up for those  
costs. It's just that there are occasionally authors who are so  
extreme that they go down in the corporate mythos, and in those  
cases, the publisher has to have some control mechanism, some  
consequences that they can ring down on the author's head.

No one with publishing contracts experience has any disagreement. But  
writers' groups aren't staffed by publishers. They're staffed by  
writers. And we all know that most of the writers we work with have a  
relatively slight understanding of the other side of the industry.  
This is just another example of that phenomenon.
