That was the information I was missing.  I wouldn't claim to know just 
how universal kill fees and so forth are, but I know they are wide 
spread.  The only time I backed out of a contract I did it with 
alacrity before editing or any other work started for this reason.  The 
publisher folded less than a year later (and still owes me some money) 
so I guess you could say me and the publisher narrowly escaped each 
other ;)
